February 2026. Wines of Sicily

The February meeting of the Tuesday Tipplers was presented by one of the original members, Terry. His subject was wines of Sicily.

This island is a vast vineyard, the second largest in Italy, and produces wines of all quality levels, some very good; especially those grown in the shadow of Etna.

The first wine was Borgo Selene 2025. An easy-going white from Sicily’s sun-drenched west coast. Made at the Curatolo Arini family winery, it had a fresh vivacious nose with a crisp and refreshing on the palate.

Secondly, Sensale Nero d’Avola 2024. A deeply coloured red with ripe berry intensity and an elegant, lingering finish. The palate was intense, balanced and persistent, with soft tannins.

Thirdly, Borgo Selene Nerello Mascalese 2024. This juicy red that punches well above its weight. The palate was soft and smooth, with gentle tannins, cherry fruit, spice and a subtle earthy lift.

Finally, Donafugata sul Vulcano 2021. From vineyards on Etna’s northern slopes, pale ruby in the glass, it opened with notes of sour cherry, redcurrant and crushed herbs. On the palate, it’s savoury and structured with refined tannins, a touch of white pepper and a long mineral finish. Overall, a good demonstration of the wines of Sicily.
